These 4th and 5th grade self portraits are inspired by Roy Lichtenstein and his Benday Dot art. We looked at several examples and then took pictures of the students. Using the Sketch Me phone app, we converted each photo to a line drawing and printed it. The students then traced the line drawing onto printed dot paper. We taped the paper onto the large windows in the hall for easy tracing. They used colored pencil to fill in the areas and the dots. This multi-step process took several classes but the students really enjoyed it. They loved the idea of editing their pictures as they went, smoothing out hair or reshaping eyebrows.
