Art technique is only a part of creating and appreciating art.  The change that occurs within the artist is, in many ways, more important.  When I teach art, I teach children what it means to develop an artist’s attitude.

An artist:

  • Draws or sketches every day
  • Uses positive self-talk
  • Knows it won’t be perfect the first time (or the 2nd, or the 3rd)
  • Practices
  • Imagines
  • Perseveres
  • Takes risks, stretching to try something new
  • Observes (the world, his/her own work, the works of others)
  • Evaluates

Many of these ideas fall under the 8 Studio Habits of Mind.
